Wrinkle Reduction

Wrinkle Reduction

The Anatomy of the Wrinkle - The lines that appear between your brows (glabellar lines) actually result from muscle movement and the passage of time.

You may have heard the expression "wearing your emotions on your sleeve," but in reality you wear them on your face. If you're angry or annoyed, for example, you knit your brows together. Underneath your skin, your facial muscles contract, cause a pleating of the overlying skin, and then, as anyone can see, you're frowning.

After years of crinkling and wrinkling, those glabellar lines start to linger longer and can become more pronounced. For women, whose faces tend to be more animated than men's, and whose skin is typically more delicate, these lines may appear exaggerated and more permanent.

Fortunately, there is a way to reduce moderate to severe glabellar lines. Treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic can visibly smooth and soften moderate to severe frown lines between your brows. An improvement can be seen within days and may last up to 4 months, although results may vary. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women surveyed rated the improvement in the appearance of frown lines between their brows as moderate to better 1 month after treatment. One 10-minute treatment, a few tiny injections and within days there's a noticeable improvement in those persistent lines between the brows, which can last up to 4 months. Results may vary.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows to form over time.

A million people have been treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic since FDA approval in 2002. Not just models and movie stars, but people from all types of professions.

What is Botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a bacterium that blocks the release of acetylcholine, the substance responsible for transmitting electrical impulses that elicit muscle contraction. In medicine, Botulinum toxin is injected directly in to hyperactive muscles. It has been safely and effectively used for various treatments in medicine since the early eighties, both adults and children. For example Botulinum toxin is used at The Bristol Royal Infirmary to relax spastic muscles in children with cerebral palsy.

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people from 18 to 65 years of age. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

How does Botulinum toxin work?

Hyperactivity of the facial expression muscles often results in the development of deep frown lines, forehead lines and/or crow's feet. Injecting Botulinum toxin into the affected area temporarily paralyses the underlying muscles responsible for wrinkling, giving the face a more relaxed and pleasant appearance. The wrinkles become smoother or disappear altogether.

When and how long does Botulinum toxin work?

The initial effects of treatment become visible within 48 to 72 hours. The maximum effect is reached in about 1 to 2 weeks.
Your facial expression will become more relaxed but no means mask-like. The overall result is very natural.
The effect of treatment generally lasts 4 to 6 months. Re-treatment is then required.

Facial lines are caused by the repeated use of the facial muscles in a particular manner. Just as a freshly ironed shirt will become severely creased at, for example, the elbow as a result of bending the arm, so likewise our facial lines form whenever we frown, squint or smile.

The Hibernation treatment is a preventative treatment. It temporarily freezes the muscle. The aim is to break the habits that cause our facial lines to form to soften your face and make you look younger. Treatments are quick and painless.
